1. Start with what is already there

Bare dirt (cheapest start), a sound slab to build over (next), or a failing slab to demolish (most expensive)?Is there demolition and haul-off? Published paver pricing usually excludes it.Truck access to the work area, or does everything come through a narrow gate by wheelbarrow? Access is labor, and labor is most of the bill.

2. Where the money goes (rough shares)

Excavation, base and compaction: often 35 to 45% (the invisible part that decides longevity).Pavers and surface material: 25 to 35%.Setting and cutting labor: 15 to 20% (pattern complexity lives here).Edge restraint, joint sand, fabric: a small share with outsized consequences.

3. The decisions that cost nothing

Go lighter. A light paver in the same line costs the same and runs dramatically cooler in the sun.Layout orientation: which way the pattern runs changes the look for free.Size to the furniture you actually own before designing.Book off-peak for real start dates and first choice of crew.

4. Never cut these

Base depth and compaction. Money saved here comes back as settling.Edge restraint. Cheapest line, most disproportionate failure.Drainage. Water problems do not wait, and fixing them later means removing what you built.Permits, licensing, and joint-sand quality.

5. Map your scope

List each area (patio, driveway, walkway, pool deck) with rough square footage.Mark which carry vehicles (driveways cost more per sq ft than patios).Note any slope, steps, or retaining, which is structural work with its own cost.Flag where water currently pools; drainage correction is cheaper done during the project.
